    • The celebration of the 59 th birthday of a man. 'Ugraradha' means angry or harsh nature of 'time'. Shanthi means the quelling or reducing the severity . In a man's lifespan, the pre-sixty period is spent in material pursuit. and post-sixty period is supposed to be spent on spiritual pursuit. To fulfill the pursuit Ugraradha Shanthi is performed as a prayer to God.
  • Sashtiapthapoorthi

    • In Sanskrit, Sashti means sixty (60), Aptha is age and Poorthi is completion. Sashtiapthapoorthi is the celebration of the completion of sixty years of age of a man. The sages and rishis considered the sixtieth year as a re-birth. Hence, they insisted on the repetition of the same rituals performed during one's first birthday (Apthapoorthi or Ayush homam).

The Amritaghateswarar - Abirami Temple is the most famous temple in Thirukkadaiyur. This Chola temple was built in the 11th century AD and has been in existence since the period of Raja Raja Cholan. It is believed that Lord Shiva protected Markandeya, son of Mrikandu, a sage and devotee of Lord Shiva, from Yama, the god of death. Markandeya is said to have hugged the Shiva Lingam in the temple and pleased with his devotion Lord Siva rescued him. Of this significance, devotees visit this temple to pray for a long life. Several couples perform the Sashtiaptha poorthi and the Sadhabishegam function at this temple. An interesting feature of this temple is that it houses a Mayanam, which in Tamil means crematorium.
